Mental Health Therapist Job Summary: Provides mental health assessments, diagnostic screening, individual therapy and referrals to psychiatric services to HIV positive clients with a mental health diagnosis.
Essential Functions:
Assesses clients mental health needs of HIV positive PLASE clients in permanent and transitional housing;; Provides diagnostic screening using DSMIV to assess mental health problems; Develops relationships with clients that have trust and respect; Refers clients to psychiatrist from North Baltimore Mental Health Center for psychiatric evaluations and prescriptions Provides individual therapy as appropriate for each client, carrying a case load of up to 25 clients at any one time. Works with the psychiatrist providing a team approach for the individual client Educates clients, staff and volunteers on mental health issues and the impact on HIV/AIDs; Serves as a resource on how to decrease and avoid engaging in risky behavior; Refers clients to appropriate health facilities; Meets with staff to educate them and plan client care, monitor medication review and other mental health-related staff functioning. Coordinates on an as-needed basis with mental health facilities on behalf of residents; Provides crisis counseling when there is a mental health emergency including suicide help calls; Meets with residents, family members, staff and other appropriate caregivers to inform, educate and plan for the clients needs; Completes reports, forms, and correspondence as required by the funding agency- the AIDS Administration; Works on interdisciplinary teams to discuss resident needs and plan for future action; Seeks out and incorporates into work response one activity annually to address the larger causes of homelessness and poverty; Keeps abreast by reading relevant periodicals and attending continuing education courses, workshops and seminars; and Performs other job related duties as assigned. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to gain thorough knowledge of Project P.L.A.S.E.’s policies and procedures; Ability to act as a representative of Project P.L.A.S.E. to the public; Knowledge of relevant mental health programs; Knowledge of mental illness, addiction and HIV/AIDS; Ability to effectively communicate and empathize with individuals from diverse backgrounds especially those with special needs or with a tendency to become hostile; Ability to prioritize and adjust quickly to all kinds of situations; Ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with other professionals; Ability to persuade individuals and gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas; Ability to negotiate and resolve conflicts; Ability to work flexible hours and work independently; Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records; and Ability to use sound judgment and remain calm in crisis or emergency situations. Education and Experience:
Masters level social worker or Psychology major Licensed to provide mental health therapy ( LCSW-C) or Licensed Certified Professional Counselor ( LCPC). Two or more years professional experience providing therapy Valid Maryland Drivers License;
